On Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 October 2024, natur&ëmwelt organised a birdwatching weekend together with the Schlammwiss bird ringing station in Übersyren and the Nature and Forest Agency's Biodiversum.

There was a full programme for interested bird lovers on the subject of bird protection: guided tours, bird ringing, children's activities and migratory bird observation and counting.

The Lecuit company provided various telescopes and binoculars for testing. By Sunday evening, 2,500 birds had been counted in Luxembourg, with the common (Eurasian) chaffinch (780), the Canada goose (300) and the Eurasian skylark (230) taking the top three spots.

Similar events took place simultaneously in 35 European countries, organised by natur&ëmwelt's BirdLife partners. In total, there were 984 birdwatching stations, with around 25,000 visitors counted. The most birds were counted in Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands. Across Europe, there were over 3.5 million birds counted, with the barnacle goose, the starling and the chaffinch making up the top 3. The exact results for each country can be found are available at https://www.eurobirdwatch.eu/.

During these observations, some rare species were also spotted. The yellow-browed warbler was recorded in Hungary, the Netherlands and also in Luxembourg - this was the fifteenth sighting of this rare migratory bird in the Grand Duchy.
