This year, natur&ëmwelt, a leading nature conservation NGO in Luxembourg, called for participants for its nineteenth bird census on Friday 26 January, Saturday 27 or Sunday 28 January 2024.
The annual census estimates populations and tracks trends of common bird species in urban areas over the years. The action pays particular attention to the most common bird species in gardens and around houses in winter, such as the blue tit, the sparrow or the blackbird. In addition, the bird census is also an important awareness campaign of natur&ëmwelt. Birds are particularly easy to observe at the bird feeder, which allows citizens to get to know various bird species and become familiar with nature in general.
Participants will have to observe and count this weekend, for an hour of their choice, the birds in their garden or on their balcony. Then, they will need to write down all the bird species observed and their respective numbers. Partakers will be able to send the collected data using the online form (including counting instructions and photos of the most common species in winter) at www.naturemwelt.lu.
Class participation in the action is also welcome, natur&ëmwelt added, specifying that teachers can obtain participation forms and corresponding teaching materials from the association. Moreover, ten winners will be selected at random. The last deadline to send one’s participation form will be Monday 5 February 2024.
In 2023, the great tit claimed the top spot, visiting 86% of Luxembourg gardens during the migration weekend, making it the most frequent species. Following closely, the blackbird was observed in 85% of gardens. Other common species include the blue tit (81%), the house sparrow (80%) and the robin (75%).
