On Thursday 6 October 2022, Luxembourg's Ministry of Energy and Spatial Planning provided an insight onto the efforts being taken to reduce natural gas consumption; according to the ministry, Luxembourg is on the right track, but caution is still required.

Luxembourg's Minister for Energy, Claude Turmes, presented an initial report on efforts to reduce natural gas consumption in Luxembourg. Currently, Luxembourg is achieving its target of reducing natural gas consumption by 15%. In August, the reduction corresponded to approximately 37% and, in September, the reduction corresponded to approximately 26% compared to consumption in those months between 2017 to 2022.

The Minister stated “Current figures show that in Luxembourg, all actors – the State, municipalities, companies and citizens – have answered the call and are making efforts to save gas. I thank them for their contribution to these first results. However, caution is still required: if the winter promises to be very cold, gas consumption for heating could still increase considerably. I therefore always strongly call for energy saving efforts!

Luxembourg has joined the effort of EU Member States to reduce – in a first phase of a voluntary nature – by 15% the demand for natural gas between 1 August 2022 to 31 March 2023.
