The Embassy of Japan in Luxembourg has announced several events involving demonstrations of knife sharpening in the traditional Japanese way, in collaboration with Sakai City Industrial Promotion Center.
Background
Japanese cutlery is now recognised all over the world and highly sought-after by top chefs. Sakai, a port city south of Osaka, is also the capital of traditional cutlery. During this demonstration, members of the public are invited to discover Sakai and its expertise in the company of International Market Development Coordinator Eric Chevallier and master sharpener Hideki Ino.
All events are undertaken in French (simultaneous translation from Japanese to French).
Programme
The first public event is being held on Saturday 1 February 2025 (all day) in the Belle Etoile shopping centre during “Yôkoso” Japan Week, with demonstrations for visitors to see live knife sharpening skills of Japanese knives.
The second public event is taking place on Sunday 2 February 2025 between 14:00 - 16:00 at the Centre Culturel Cents (167 rue de Trèves) in collaboration with the Japanese Embassy (fully booked).
In addition to these public events, other (private) events are also taking place at the Residence of the Japanese Ambassador (Private) in collaboration with the Embassy on Monday 3 January 2025, and at the École d'Hôtellerie et de Tourisme du Luxembourg (EHTL) in Diekirch on Tuesday for students who will be given the opportunity to try it for themselves. As the EHTL is also involved in the Osaka Expo Pavilion 2025, it will be a good opportunity and cultural exchange.
