On 13 December 2017, the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture announced its decision to award the title of "European Capital of Culture 2022" to Esch-sur-Alzette.

The decision to award Luxembourg’s second biggest city the European Capital of Culture 2022 was announced to the European authorities earlier this month and now, the Ministry of Culture will follow the conclusions of the jury which recommended awarding the title on the basis of the application file entitled "Remix Culture".

As a result, the city of Esch-sur-Alzette can now officially claim the title of European Capital of Culture 2022, a project that will also feature its surrounding region in Luxembourg as well as in France. This title will be an opportunity for the southern region of Luxembourg to show the whole of Europe its diversity and cultural wealth.

The first financial strand of €4 million will be provided for in the 2018 budget.
