The Luxembourg Institute for Standardisation, Accreditation, Safety and Quality of Products and Services (ILNAS) has announced their establishment of a standard for measuring the surface area of all housing types.

This new standardised form of measuring will apply to all floor spaces, whether old or now, individual or part of a larger house. It will address the issue of unanimity between promoters, purchasers, notaries etc. It is however limited to residential housing. This standard is the first to be drawn up in Luxembourg in the field of construction.

ILNAS is an administrative body under the supervision of the Minister of the Economy, tasked with identifying the need for new national standards. It coordinates with other socio-economic actors in order to perform its duties.

This represents a significant step forward for standardisation in Luxembourg, inasmuch as it is the first time that a Luxembourg standard has been drawn up at national level by ILNAS, in consultation with experts in the field concerned. It does not, therefore, simply involve the transposition of a European standard at national level,” said ILNAS in an official statement released on Tuesday 15 March.
