On Friday 18 September 2015, the first stone of the new Tramsschapp to be constructed in Luxembourg City and the Municipality of Niederanven was laid.
The ceremonious laying of the stone was conducted in the presence of Minister of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, François Bausch; Mayor of Luxembourg City, Lydie Polfer; First Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Niederanven; and officials from Luxtram S.A. During the ceremony, a parchment bearing the signatures of each partner was sealed in a stone onsite at the Centre de Remisage et de Maintenance (CRM).
Built on an area of nearly 33,000 m2 by German architects Werkgemeinschaft Karlsruhe together with Luxembourgish engineering consulting offices INCA, AUCARRE and RMC, the CRM will host and maintain the 32 trams which will operate between Cloche d'Or and Findel.
The CRM will consist of three environmentally-friendly buildings, with two buildings dedicated to the storage and maintenance of the trams and the third hosting the centralised control centre (PCC) of the tram network and the Luxtram SA headquarters. The CRM site will also consist of 4km of tram tracks, comprising 8 channels for storage; 3 service tracks for washing, sanding and lathing; 4 tracks for servicing and maintenance; and one test track.
Looking forward, the CRM will continue work on the network and the landscaping and construction of the buildings and access routes. Work on the tram line will be carried out in 2016 with a view to the CRM hosting the first train in 2017. The trial tests will follow before the commercial commissioning of the first section of the network in the second half of 2017.
