Following the previous (first) CryptoParty4Kids will be held s part of the BEE SECURE initiative during the 11th edition of the hack.lu conference last autumn, a follow-up CryptoParty4Kids event took place on 29 July at the House of Europe in Luxembourg city centre.
The event focussed on understanding the mechanisms and issues of cryptography, building bridges between the secret passages of the Middle Ages and today's technologies. It showed how and why we must protect data ... Organised by SECURITYMADEIN.LU under the BEE SECURE initiativ, the event brought together children aged 7 to 12 years who have become familiar with the world of information security and general IT. This cryptoparty was mainly led by two experts in information security: Chris Pinchen, co-founder of Playfair Traiining, and Matthew Farcot of SECURITYMADEIN.LU.
It provided an introduction to "hacking culture" by way of an interactive presentation that helped define what a hacker is. It also included an introduction to security and cryptography - Secret passages in castles, and backdoors in electronic messaging, 3D keys to open the padlock to TSA suitcases ... All these examples have allowed the participating children to think about the concept of the illusion of security. It also included an initiation to the IP network - a dynamic game that allowed children to understand the TCP/IP protocol at the base of the Internet and some basic commands of network engineering.
The organisers agredd that the event led to very enriching interactions and has received many positive feedback from parents and children alike.
