Nicolas Schmit is representing Luxembourg at a high-level conference on the digital transformation of businesses and European industry taking place on Tuesday 16 February 2016 in Brussels.
The Minister of Labour, Employment and the Social and Solidarity Economy will be speaking on digital skills in a rapidly changing economy, a point picked up on in a recent PwC Luxembourg report on pressures faced by Banking and Capital Markets CEOs.
"Depite the fact that the Luxembourg labour market has the largest share of employees in the ICT sector in Europe, employers are having problems in the recruitment of new ICT specialists," the Minister commented. "Social investment, especially in training, is our preferred way of filling gaps in digital skills. The recent launch of the fit4coding project is a concrete example of this strategy."
The conference is being hosted by Elżbieta Bieńkowska, European Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, who will be joined by several MEPs and Chief Executives from European industry and business organisations.
The event will look at digital technologies within their context as the motor for the so-called 'fourth industrial revolution', upturning and transforming current social, economic and environmental norms in the EU. These changes are thought to be capable of bringing about new international market opportunities, but the need for concrete measures for industries and enterprises has sparked discussions thereof.
