On Friday 28 February 2025, a public demonstration took place in Luxembourg City in solidarity with the large-scale protests in Greece, marking the second anniversary of the deadly train accident in Tempi.
The protest was organised by a coalition of concerned Greek citizens living in Luxembourg, who are committed to raising awareness about critical issues in global transportation safety and ensuring justice for the victims of the Tempi crash. The organisers described the demonstration as an effort "to raise awareness and demand justice for the 57 victims of the tragic train crash in Tempi, Greece".
The organisers reported that about 500 people gathered in Place Jan Palach in Luxembourg-Ville last Friday, "in a show of unity". They added: "The peaceful demonstration served as a powerful reminder that the strength of the people lies in their collective voice. Protesters expressed solidarity with the victims and their families while calling for a thorough and open [transparent] review of safety practices".
During the rally, demonstrators recited a memorial text prepared by the Association of People Affected by the Tempi Crash, "honouring the lives lost and reaffirming their commitment to ensuring that safety measures are rigorously enforced". The organisers stressed that "their aim is not to single out any individual but to advocate for a process where accountability and clarity are paramount".
They recalled that the Tempi collision involved a passenger train and a cargo train and has since raised questions over the effectiveness of safety measures and the general management of the railway network in Greece. The organisers added that evidence has emerged over the past two years, highlighting concerns over key safety protocols.
This demonstration marked the second major gathering in Luxembourg aimed at raising awareness about the crash.
