Cactus has awarded UNICEF-Luxembourg a cheque for €10,664, raised by selling orange juice.

As a result of sales of its orange juice in solidarity with UNICEF’s project “Schools for Africa”, Cactus has collected a sum of €10,664 for the charity.

The cheque was presented by Cactus manager Laurent Schonckert to UNICEF-Luxembourg’s president Maryse Arendt. The money collected will go towards the charity’s educational projects in African countries.

For every one litre of orange juice sold by Cactus, the supermarket donated 10 cents to UNICEF, the proceeds of which will help finance projects in Guinea-Bissau, a country in West Africa which has experienced political instability and a weak economy since it gained its independence. In fact, one-third of school-age children are not educated, especially the poorest children, girls and children with special needs.

The funds raised will help these children access schooling and educational materials, train teachers, modernised infrastructure, and improved living conditions in the communities.

Since the launch of the “Schools for Africa” campaign in 2004, over 30 million children in 13 African countries have benefitted from access to education, thousands of new schools have been built and the quality of teaching has developed considerably.
