On Wednesday 8 July 2015, NGO Handicap International (HI) Luxembourg attended the end of year school party of Lycée de Garçons Esch, at the invitation of twenty students of its 7ème class.
At the beginning of the schol year, the 7ème class at the Lycée decided to support several associations as an initiative from thirteen-year-olds Melanie Afonso, Gelsomina Errichiello and Hana Ghasi. The class organised bake sales through the year to raise money for the chosen organisations, and their recent school event involved the installation of a Mini Shoe Pyramid where students and visitors could receive information about HI's actions, and learn about landmines, cluster bombs and explosive remnants of war (ERW).
These weapons currently pose threats to nearly 65 countries, with a life taken every two hours from mines and cluster bombs, with children accounting for over 40% of the victims. Handicap International have therefore emphasised the importance of this project, which engages young citizens in the awareness of, and fight against, these unnecessary deaths.
