This week-end saw the annual commemorations of the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) in Luxembourg, attended by many members, past and present, of the RAF.
The Wings week-end started on Friday evening with a reception at the British Ambassador's residence attended by local RARA representatives along with visitors from RAF Cosford and Coningsby who were participating in a week-end of commemoration and comradeship.
Air Marshal Sturley joined Ambassador Walpole to present a British flag to Monique Stirn, Inspector General of the Grand Ducal Police, to thank them for their help during the commemorations.
On Satirday, British Ambassador to Luxembourg, Alice Walpole, attended a RAFA memorial ceremony at the Place Winston churchill in Luxembourg city where she laid a wreath on behalf of the British goverment at the statue of the former British Prime Minister. Later on Saturday the week-end of commemoration moved on to Pétange where they visited the graves of former airmen at La Madelaine and the Nazi victims monument. Later, the RAFA Wings Ball was held in the Novotel in Kirchberg, during which a fund-raising raffle was held.
The RAF Association Charity Wings Ball is the Luxembourg Branch's biggest event of the year and is a culmination of all the hard work done by members and friends during the year. Welfare is at the absolute heart of the Royal Air Forces Association, a member-led welfare charity. By association, everyone in the organisation from fundraiser to member to welfare officer or case Worker is a part of the welfare chain.
RAF war graves in the Grand Duchy are located at Asselborn, Diekirch, Folschette (Rambrouch), Hollerich, Hupperdange, Mertert, Petange and Troisvierges, as well as various other memorials.
