On Tuesday 13 August, the Ministry of State confirmed that an interministerial meeting took place to review the Caritas dossier after an investigation was launched in relation to a misappropriation of funds.

Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, Luc Frieden, brought together the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Action, Xavier Bettel, the Minister of Education, Children and Youth, Claude Meisch, the Minister for Family, Solidarity, Living Together and Reception of Refugees, Max Hahn, the Minister of Finance, Gilles Roth, and the Minister of Health and Social Security, Martine Deprez, to take stock of the issue.

The ministers reportedly heard a report from the monitoring committee and discussed several additional works to be carried out and discussions to be held with Caritas in the coming days.

Furthermore, the ministers decided that payments to Caritas legal entities not affected by the embezzlement of funds and which have not taken out credit lines may be resumed under certain conditions.

Work will continue throughout August at the level of the Government and the monitoring committee to guarantee, from September, the continuation of the activities that Caritas carries out on behalf of the State in favour of the most vulnerable and deprived people in Luxembourg, the Ministry of State added.

Prime Minister Frieden will convene new meetings depending on the progress of the work during August.
