Luxembourg non-profit organisation Aide à l’Enfance de l’Inde et du Népal (AEIN) has launched an urgent fundraising campaign to support the earthquake relief efforts in Jajarkot and Western Rukum, Nepal.

AEIN’s new fundraising campaign aims to provide support to the victims of the recent earthquake that struck Jajarkot, Nepal on Friday 3 November 2023 at 11:47.

The earthquake that occurred in the vicinity of Ramidanda, Jajarkot, wrought widespread devastation, resulting in the loss of 153 lives (101 in Jajarkot and 52 in Western Rukum) and left over 170 individuals injured. This seismic event stands as the most lethal the nation has experienced since 2015. In the aftermath, the importance of relief efforts and support cannot be overstated in providing assistance to those who have been affected, as AEIN highlighted.

While the main road access remains intact, reports of local road damage and landslides near residential areas highlighted the continued risks faced by the local population. Close monitoring and immediate relief efforts need to be maintained to ensure the safety of the affected communities during this time, the non-profit organisation added.

Hardly any houses remained standing with 430 out of 476 houses of Sanobheri ward Number 1 of Western Rukum having been demolished and deemed unsafe for habitation. This left a significant portion of the population vulnerable and in need of immediate assistance.

The immediate focus should be on providing first aid, safe and secure shelter, medical care and essential support for the victims, especially for pregnant and lactating women to safeguard their health and that of their newborns, warm clothes and instant food items, psycho-social counselling support as well as an integrated mobile health camp,” AEIN noted, emphasising the gravity of the situation and their commitment  to mobilising resources to aid the affected communities, particularly focusing on the welfare and well-being of children.

Through this fundraising campaign, AEIN stressed that it aims to raise funds to provide immediate relief, including dignity kits, blankets, medical aid, nutritional and psychological support to those affected by the earthquake in Jajarkot and Western Rukum. Furthermore, according to the organisation, the funds will be utilised for long-term recovery efforts, to help the affected communities rebuild their lives and regain stability.

"We are deeply saddened by the impact of the earthquake in Jajarkot and Western Rukum and are determined to provide assistance to those in need," said Françoise Binsfeld, Executive Director at AEIN. "By joining hands and supporting this fundraising campaign, we can make a significant difference in the lives of the affected children and their families."
