The American Women’s Club of Luxembourg (AWCL) has announced the launch of its annual Gifts for Kids by AWCL campaign, a volunteer-led initiative that ensures every child living in a Luxembourg foyer experiences the joy and tradition of Saint Nicholas Day.

Hoping to match 2025’s campaign, which managed to fulfil 1,725 wishes across over 130 foyers, for 2026 the AWCL are introducing several new ways to participate in and support the project, including seamless donations through Wero and a digital giving tree.

On Friday 20 and Saturday 21 November 2026, the AWCL will welcome the foyers to the AWCL Clubhouse in Luxembourg-Beggen to collect the gifts. The gifts will then be distributed to the children on Saint Nicholas Day (Saturday 5 December).

Since 1996, this volunteer driven initiative has worked hand-in-hand with counsellors and caregivers to help children feel included, valued and seen. What began as a small effort has grown into a national tradition of giving, supported by companies, schools and individuals across the country.

The programme allows children to select a toy with support from their counsellor and each request is placed on a personalised ornament that includes the child’s name, age, gift request and price. These ornaments are then displayed on Giving Trees hosted by sponsors across Luxembourg. Donors contribute the amount needed to make those wishes possible. Gifts are then purchased and provided to foyers in time for Saint Nicholas Day and donors are encouraged to keep their ornament somewhere visible, as a reminder of the child whose wish they helped fulfil.

The AWCL said: “Every gift is chosen by the child, reinforcing dignity, joy and belonging. No child should be left out of this important cultural tradition in Luxembourg. The foyers celebrate Saint Nicholas Day together, allowing children and families to share in the excitement and warmth of the season. Sponsors and donors play a visible role in making this possible, supporting not only the children but also the dedicated counsellors who guide and care for them throughout the year.”

How to Support Gifts for Kids

Corporate Sponsorship: Host a physical Giving Tree in your office or share our digital tree online (find it at https://www.gfklux.org/digital-giving-tree). AWCL provides all materials and handles the logistics. Most organisations request between 50 and 100 ornaments per tree.

School Sponsorship: Schools can host a Giving Tree or promote the programme digitally, helping students learn the joy of giving.

Individual Giving: A €25 donation covers the cost of a gift for one child. Every contribution makes a difference, and 100% of donations go directly toward purchasing gifts.
