Caritas Luxembourg has launched a appeal for donations as it provides emergency aid in Haiti and continues its work in Afghanistan.

This weekend, dramatic events took place in both Haiti and Afghanistan: Caritas Luxembourg has been working for more than 15 years in Haiti and for 20 years in Afghanistan, despite all the difficulties.

Saturday's earthquake once again plunges Haiti into a more than dramatic situation. As of Sunday evening, more than 1,200 people were killed and 7,000 were injured. Experts believe that these numbers will increase significantly as the hours go by. The population is desperate and has spent the night outside. Caritas Luxembourg has been working with its partners in the field since the great earthquake of 2010 and supports emergency relief efforts. Thousands of homeless people need tents, tarpaulins, food, clothing, hygiene kits and clean water. During the night, Caritas Luxembourg released funds so that essential items could be distributed as quickly as possible on the ground.

In Afghanistan, Caritas Luxembourg has been working for many years in small hospitals located in the mountains. The security and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is taking a dramatic turn with recent events. Hundreds of thousands of displaced people who sought protection in Kabul are now sleeping in the capital's parks.

Caritas Luxembourg has called for increased humanitarian aid now. The country's poor economic situation, exacerbated by the pandemic, means that 60% of Afghans already live below the poverty line and are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

A few weeks ago, Godehard Engels, doctor from Caritas Luxembourg, was able to revisit all the hospitals supported by Caritas Luxembourg in Afghanistan and take action in the event of a takeover by the Taliban. “However, the speed with which the Taliban took control of the country surprised us all. For now, the hospitals are continuing their activities,” emphasised Godehard Engels. *Caritas Luxembourg wants to continue helping people in need. We cannot leave the patients and local staff in Afghanistan alone".

One can support the action of Caritas Luxembourg by making a donation by transfer to the CCPL IBAN LU34 1111 0000 2020 0000 account with the mention "Aid for Haiti and Afghanistan".
