UNICEF has announced that it is stepping up its door-to-door activities in Luxembourg this month, while respecting the safety measures in force, to appeal to the public to join its family of "Global Parents" and support vulnerable children worldwide.

Thanks to UNICEF’s outreach activities over the past few years in Luxembourg, the family of regular donors, which UNICEF calls "Global Parents", now amount to nearly 11,000 members. Together they provide drinking water to children, provide first aid in disasters or build schools.

Global Parents' monthly donations allow UNICEF to better plan its projects, respond quickly to emergencies, work more efficiently and ensure that activities for children are sustainable. In addition, the monthly support of Global Parents helps to save administrative costs, both in Luxembourg and in countries supported by regular donors. UNICEF noted that €0.66 per day or €20 per month can vaccinate 55 children against measles.

With the aim of building public confidence, UNICEF teams will be taking all the necessary precautions to be able to resume their work while respecting the barrier gestures and health measures in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, they wear masks and are provided with disinfectant. In addition, in order to respect and emphasise the safety distance, each team has a two-metre mat to pose in front of front doors. To avoid any personal contact, a new SMS signature system has also been developed and implemented.

Regarding why UNICEF is going door-to-door, the UN agency stressed its belief that meeting with the public is essential to educate about the importance of regular support for children worldwide and to recruit new Global Parents. UNICEF added that it always informs the police and the municipalities concerned of its teams' presence. Since UNICEF depends entirely on voluntary contributions, this approach allows the continuation and sustainability of its projects. Teams will always wear clothing with the UNICEF logo and are provided with a UNICEF badge. In any case, teams will not ask for cash during registration (SEPA mandate) and the SEPA mandate can be terminated at any time via email: dons@unicef.lu.

Those wishing to become a Global Parent are invited to contact UNICEF teams or visit unicef.lu. The list of places, towns and Cactus supermarkets where UNICEF teams can be found is updated at the start of each week on unicef.lu/unicefteam.
