On Tuesday 5 November 2024, the Edward Steichen Award ceremony took place at the Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (MUDAM) in Luxembourg-Kirchberg.

The winner of this year’s Edward Steichen Award was Marianne Villière, while Clio Van Aerde was selected at the 2024 Edward Steichen Resident.

Crown Princess Stéphanie of Luxembourg and Luxembourg's Minister of Culture, Eric Thill, attended the award ceremony, along with other guests and speakers.

The Edward Steichen Award is a biennial incentive supporting emerging European talents in the field of contemporary art. As a tribute to the life and work of Edward Steichen, born in Luxembourg in 1879, the prize honours Steichen’s artistic achievements as a photographer and curator, as well as his commitment to advocating the arts and nurturing new talent.

The Award was founded in 2004 to create the opportunity for young practitioners to expand their horizon by immersing themselves in the culturally stimulating context of New York City.

The Edward Steichen Award Luxembourg has been designed for European artists living and working in Luxembourg and the greater geographical region around the Grand Duchy while a second award, the Edward Steichen Luxembourg Resident in New York, was added in 2011 specifically for artists of Luxembourg origin or artists living and working in Luxembourg.

Marianne Villière was the recipient of the 2024 Edward Steichen Award Luxembourg and was awarded a six-month residency in New York City, at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP), a residency-based contemporary art centre in Brooklyn, for artists and curators from around the world.

Clio Van Aerde was selected as the Edward Steichen Luxembourg Resident in New York and was granted a four-month residency at the same facility.

Following the awards ceremony, a presentation of portfolios by the winners took place. The talented laureates discussed their work in conversation with Lisa Burke.

The evening ended with a celebratory reception in the Mudam Café.

Candidates are shortlisted by Award nominators coming from museums, universities, art publishers and cultural institutions specialising in contemporary art. The nominators are from Luxembourg and the surrounding Greater Region.
