After receiving the Clinton Global Citizen Award in September 2015, ArcelorMittal's handling of the 2014-2015 Ebola virus outbreak has now been recognised with a 2016 Global Risk Award.
The 'Excellence in the face of adversity' award was presented to ArcelorMittal Mining by the Institute of Risk Management for the company's continued operation on iron ore mining and shipments without interruption throughout the Ebola outbreak in Liberia, as well as its establishment of the Ebola Private Sector Mobilisation Group (EPSMG) as a platform for Ebola knowledge sharing between companies.
"The outbreak of Ebola in West Africa was, without doubt, one of the toughest challenges we have ever had to face in West Africa, and this award goes to our employees for their dedication during this period," commented Simon Wandke, executive vice president, CEO ArcelorMittal Mining. "We knew from an early stage that there must be other companies like us who wanted to help and take action. That is why we formed the EPSMG, as hub for private sector companies operating in West Africa to come together."
He concluded: "We are delighted with the recognition the EPSMG continues to receive and focus on how this type of proactive response could be used during other global crises."
