Four Luxembourg-based companies - Arthur Welter, CFL multimodal, LuxairCARGO and POST were awarded the Lean and Green for Logistics Label yesterday, by the Secretary of State, Camille Gira, and Nico Anten, Managing Director of Connekt, for demonstrating through a plan of action, that they will ensure reduction of CO2 emissions by at least 20% in a five-year span.

To be eligible for the label, the companies had to undergo the international stimulation programme developed by Connekt, which encourages businesses and public entities to move to a higher level of sustainability, by adopting cost saving measures, as well as reducing the impact of their activities on the environment.

It was launched and implemented in Luxembourg in June of last year, with collaboration between the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure and the Cluster for Logistics. Workshops and meetings were organised throughout the year, for the transport and logistics companies, in order to help them develop sound plans of action, which were then assessed by an independent third party.

Artur Welter Transports presented measures, which aim at reducing CO2 emissions by 29.6%. The company wants to significantly lower the amount of ‘empty kilometres’, modernise its fleet to 100% Euro 6 engine trucks and enhance vehicle telematics with a ‘Coach Driver’ tool. Beginning in the second half of last year, the company has started using ‘C.A.R.E. Diesel’, a non-fossil fuel, which unlike conventional biodiesel, can fully replace fossil diesel with fewer emissions.

Via its subsidiary CFL logistics, CFL multimodal chose the Lean and Green programme to strengthen its energy efficiency plan covering all its logistics activities and to encourage the involvement of its employees through a collective approach. CFL logistics aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 20.42% within five years, by implementing a series of measures including: the optimisation of truck routes and loading rates, reduction of fuel consumption, development of an energy-efficient and zero-emission fleet, as well as modal transfer from road to rail for specific destinations.

LuxairCARGO reviewed its energy policy and plans to reduce the CO2 emissions by 28.29 %. Among other measures, the company will replace current freezers with more efficient models and also use new modern lighting in the Cargo Centre.

POST Luxembourg aims to reduce their CO2 emissions by 23.41 % via their plan of action and chose to participate in the Lean and Green programme, since it allows the articulation of a vision with a clear and quantifiable goal over the next five years. Eco-driving is one of the measures in which POST Luxembourg intends to invest in more specifically to achieve the CO2 emissions reduction target.

All four companies will now display the Lean and Green logo on their trucks and other vehicles.

The programme, which started in the Netherlands in 2007 now encompasses over 350 companies in five European countries. It is fast becoming an essential European recognition model for frontrunner companies in their environmental policies.EndFragment
