On Monday 13 July 2026, the Municipality of Niederanven unveiled the winning proposal for the future redevelopment of its "Am Sand" centre, marking a major step towards the long-term development of the area through to 2050.

The municipality launched the urban planning ideas competition after a public participation process that ran from September to December 2024. It included four public workshops, two neighbourhood walks and activities involving local schoolchildren, with the resulting ideas incorporated directly into the competition brief before five interdisciplinary design teams developed their concepts for the future municipal centre.

According to the municipality, "Am Sand" already serves as the functional heart of Niederanven, bringing together schools, sports and leisure facilities, cultural venues, local shops and other public services. However, it has developed over several decades without an overall spatial concept linking these different functions into a coherent municipal centre.

The jury unanimously selected the proposal by Dewey Müller Partnerschaft mbB (Luxembourg/Cologne) and LILL + SPARLA Landschaftsarchitekten Partnerschaft mbB (Cologne). The winning concept features a clear spatial structure, high-quality public spaces, a dedicated north-south pedestrian and cycling connection and the flexibility to support future development. The jury concluded that the proposal delivers "a balanced, sustainable and future-oriented overall concept" for the future of the municipal centre.

The municipality will now use the proposal as the basis for preparing a master plan, which will further develop the competition's ideas before the required legal and planning procedures begin. The redevelopment will take place progressively over the coming years as part of the municipality's long-term vision for "Am Sand".

The municipality has also opened an exhibition showcasing all five competition proposals. The exhibition runs from Tuesday 14 July to Monday 14 September 2026 in the Municipal Council Hall at the Niederanven Municipal Building and is open to visitors during the municipality's opening hours.

Further details about the project are available on the Municipality of Niederanven's official website.
