On Monday 4 May 2026, Luxembourg’s Customs and Excise Administration reported that last month 123,940 smuggled cigarettes were seized on a flight from Athens via Amsterdam bound for Luxembourg.
According to the Customs and Excise Administration, during a customs inspection at the end of April, on a flight from Athens via Amsterdam bound for Luxembourg, the Customs and Excise Administration caught three individuals of Palestinian nationality, holding international protection status in Greece, who were carrying a total of 123,940 smuggled cigarettes from the American Eagle Gold brand, which were without tax markings and distributed across nine suitcases.
The administration said the cigarettes, manufactured in Luxembourg for the Egyptian duty-free market, had been fraudulently reintroduced into EU territory with a view to being transported to France. Information regarding the interception was shared accordingly with the French and Greek customs authorities.
The Customs and Excise Administration reminded returning holidaymakers that any quantities exceeding the legally permitted allowances for tobacco and alcohol products must be declared to customs in the red channel upon arrival at the airport.
