On Friday 27 June 2025, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Health and Social Security issued a series of recommendations aimed at helping the public stay safe and protect vulnerable individuals, as a period of high temperatures is expected in the coming days.
Luxembourg’s Minister of Health and Social Security, Martine Deprez, encouraged everyone to show solidarity and common sense in order to get through this period of hot weather safely.
Recommended precautions:
- drink water regularly in small quantities, without waiting to feel thirsty;
- avoid going outside during the hottest hours of the day;
- keep indoor spaces cool by closing windows, shutters or curtains during the day and ventilating at night or early in the morning before 09:00;
- favour light meals with high water content (e.g. fruits, vegetables);
- wear light, loose-fitting and light-coloured clothing;
- stay in a cool or air-conditioned environment if possible;
- check regularly on elderly or vulnerable individuals living alone, or at least keep in contact with them.
The ministry highlighted that young children, elderly people and individuals with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable to high temperatures. Monitoring their health and supporting them in following the recommended precautions is essential.
Some professionals may be particularly exposed to heat, with workplace-specific recommendations applying (see: High Temperatures and Heatwaves – Employer Obligations). Athletes are also advised to avoid intense physical activity during the hottest parts of the day. In the event of heatstroke, symptoms of which may include high body temperature, headaches, nausea or confusion, individuals should contact a healthcare professional or call 112 in an emergency. The ministry recommends applying these precautions to stay safe during the upcoming heat period.
