On Thursday 22 May 2025, Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs and the Grand Ducal Police presented the project for a local police unit within the Museldall police station.
The ministry noted that the local police unit is in line with the "4P" principle (more personnel, presence, proximity and prevention)), as explained by Luxembourg's Minister for Home Affairs, Léon Gloden: "More personnel means a greater presence, which allows us to be closer to citizens and promotes more effective prevention. The concrete results observed in Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette show an improvement in both the feeling of security and the actual security of citizens. The local police unit thus aims to strengthen the bond of trust between the population and the police by ensuring a visible, accessible and responsive presence on the ground."
The results obtained during the initial phase of the local police pilot project in Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette have been positive. A local police unit was recently established in Differdange as well.
To test this project in rural municipalities and gain additional experience, the authorities decided to deploy a local police unit at the Museldall police station starting from Sunday 1 June 2025. The Museldall police station covers eight municipalities: Grevenmacher, Mertert, Manternach, Biwer, Flaxweiler, Wormeldange, Lenningen and Stadtbredimus. An increase in staffing is also planned.
Pascal Peters, Director General of the Grand Ducal Police, reiterated the general objectives of the local police: strengthening police presence, increasing proximity to citizens, improving public safety and strengthening their sense of security. He explained that local police patrols are primarily planned to be deployed during the day from Monday to Saturday, as well as on Sundays depending on operational needs, and that the exact frequency and optimal number of patrols will be established following initial consultations. The Director General also emphasised that these patrols complement the police presence patrols carried out systematically.
Similar to the experiences gained in Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette, local police missions are established based on regular briefings/debriefings with municipal officials.
