Shortly before noon on Wednesday 9 October 2024, the High Commission for National Protection (HCPN), MeteoLux, the Water Management Authority (AGE) and the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) issued a weather update.
With heavy rain expected to continue (brought by ex-hurricane Kirk), particularly in the second half of Wednesday 9 October and overnight into Thursday 10 October 2024, the severe weather risk assessment unit (CERI) issued a "pre-warning" alert for flooding following its meeting on Wednesday morning.
Accumulations of between 40 and 60 litres/m2 (up to 70 litres/m2 in certain areas) are expected, with a risk of flooding across the country from midnight.
The authorities noted that the flood forecasting service is on alert. They added that heavy rainfall will cause water levels in the country's rivers to rise from midday on Wednesday. Levels at gauging stations are likely to be exceeded on Wednesday night.
The exact location of the areas with the heaviest rainfall and water level forecasts remain uncertain. Up-to-date information on water levels is available at www.inondations.lu.
Road traffic is likely to be disrupted in the areas concerned and motorists are asked to adapt their driving and remain vigilant.
The authorities said CERI continues to monitor the situation.
The MeteoLux website indicates that an orange ("danger") weather alert is currently in place for heavy rain and flooding in the Grand Duchy. The heavy rain alert is in place from 06:00 on Wednesday to 06:00 on Thursday. The flood alert is in place from 11:00 on Wednesday until 00:00 (midnight) on Friday.
Update: As of 16:30 on Wednesday, the flooding alert status had been upgraded to red.
