Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs has reiterated the importance of smoke detectors and the obligation to install such devices in all homes.

One year after the entry into force of the law which requires the occupants of a home to install a smoke detector in the escape route and bedrooms, Luxembourg's Minister of Home Affairs, Léon Gloden, has recalled its importance: "This technical tool makes it possible to detect a possible fire as early as possible. Within everyone’s reach, it alerts and protects."

The smoke detector is particularly important in the event of a nighttime fire, noted the ministry. The smoke does not wake victims, who can suffer from smoke inhalation. On average, one person in Luxembourg dies each year from smoke inhalation (poisoning).

Since 1 January 2023, smoke detectors are mandatory in all buildings containing at least one dwelling. To ensure proper functioning, added the ministry, it is important to check them regularly and replace the batteries, if necessary.
