Luxembourg's Prison Administration has announced that, on the morning of Saturday 2 July 2023 around 06:40, an inmate was found dead in his cell at the Givenich Penitentiary Centre (CPG) by prison officers.
The judicial authorities were informed and an autopsy has been ordered. Family members have been notified of the detainee's death.
The Ombudsman, in his capacity as external controller of "places of deprivation of liberty", the Deputy Director of the Prison Administration, the Director of the Givenich Penitentiary Centre, the Grand-Ducal police and a legal expert doctor, all attended the scene.
The Givenich Penitentiary Centre is a semi-open prison where inmates can move freely around the prison site during the day and can work inside or outside the prison. It is designed to enable prisoners to prepare for their release, in particular through work. It has a maximum capacity of 113 beds (max 6 beds per "pavilion" with single rooms) and accommodates both female and male prisoners.
