Feminine hygiene products and condoms are now freely available in several public toilets in Luxembourg City as part of a pilot project.
On Thursday 6 January 2022, the College of Mayors and Aldermen of the City of Luxembourg (Ville de Luxembourg - VdL) presented the dispensers of free sanitary products now installed in five public toilets in the capital.
In a first phase, the pilot project includes the installation of dispensers at the entrance to the public toilets in Place de la Constitution, Place du Théâtre, Cercle Cité, Champ du Glacis and the municipal park near the pirate ship playground. These dispensers offer essential feminine hygiene products, namely tampons and sanitary pads, as well as condoms. The public toilets in Place Guillaume II and the Bock Casemates will follow as soon as they reopen.
Maurice Bauer, the alderman responsible for equal opportunities between men and women, explained: “Thanks to this project, the City of Luxembourg is committed to gender equality and aims to support women and girls during menstruation when access to feminine hygiene products is a basic need. The self-service provision of these essential products constitutes a further step towards taking into account the differentiated needs of women and makes it possible to facilitate the daily lives of the people concerned”.
After a test phase of approximately six months, the City of Luxembourg will assess this pilot project and decide on any adaptations, or even its extension to other public toilets or other places, such as sports facilities and cultural centres. A pilot project in a primary school and a daycare facility is also being developed.
