Explosives Discovered at Recycling Centre; Credit: SIDEC

Luxembourg's Environment Administration has revealed that, occasionally, people bring ammunition and explosives to recycling centres because they do not know how to dispose of them properly: the WWII ammunition explosion last week demonstrated the risk such people take.

In recent years, recycling centres have informed the administration that grenades and tank mines, as well as various other forms of ammunition or explosives that people want to dispose of are taken to recycling centres for disposal.

Some such anecdotes:

• A person had brought old detonating capsules used to derail trains. The managers of the recycling centre immediately contacted the Luxembourg Army Demining Service (SEDAL) which intervened and destroyed the charge by a controlled explosion.

• A customer brought a bag full of chemicals to a problematic waste collection area. The bag turned out to contain a bottle filled with nitroglycerin. The managers of the recycling centre immediately contacted the Luxembourg Army Demining Service (SEDAL) which intervened and destroyed the charge by a controlled explosion.

Not all of these people understood the risk of explosion associated with transporting such an explosive.

If you discover ammunition, grenades or other explosives, do not touch them. Contact SEDAL at tel: 263322-27 or tel: 113 available 7 days a week, which will lead to an intervention as soon as possible to remove or destroy the ammunition discovered.

The goal is to avoid endangering your life and that of other citizens by accidental explosion of the devices.
