Luxembourg's Prison administration has confirmed that a fire broke out at Schrassig prison today, Wednesday 11 August 2021, with one inmate and nine prison officers brought to Kirchberg hospital following smoke inhalation.

The incident happened at around 17:30 when it is understood that an inmate set fire to his cell in the Luxembourg Penitentiary Centre. The fire was detected by the prison officers present on the section.
 
The prisoner who came into contact with the smoke was transferred to Kirchberg Hospital. The nine prison officers who were on site at the time of the incident were also transferred for medical check-ups at Kirchberg Hospital.
 
The Deputy Director of the Prison Administration, the Director of the Luxembourg Prison Centre and the Ombudsman were on the scene. Medical care was provided at the scene by the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS). The technical police of the Judicial Police Service have been tasked with investigating the specific origin of the fire.
