Despite a slight drop in June, the number of applications for asylum has increased slightly in July 2017 to 158.
The figures take into account the number of applications for asylum formally submitted to the Directorate of Immigration, and so do not correspond to the total number of arrivals in the Luxembourg Reception and Integration Agency (OLAI) facilities for the same reference period.
Throughout 2017, asylum application numbers have generally continued to rise compared to the previous three years (2013-2016), apart from January and June. The total number for 2017 has risen to 1,369.
Most July asylum seekers coming from Europe were Albanian, making up 11 out of a total of 36, followed by Serbia with 8 demanding asylum in the Grand Duchy. The total number of Europeans has however decreased compared to June which received 51 applications.
Luxembourg also received applications from Syria, who by far represent the largest number of asylum seekers from Asia with 24 out of a total of 53- much higher than the total last month of 36- as well as Algeria (18) and Morocco (11) coming from the African continent.
