On Friday 30 June 2017, the cabinet of the Luxembourg government endorsed the draft Grand-Ducal Regulation amending the law of 1 July 2008 determining the status of volunteers in the army.
The project aims at modernising the voluntary service, makes it more attractive to young recruits and adapts it to the reality of the job market.
Thus, the procedure for selecting potential recruits is changed by raising the age limit for enrollment in military service to 26 years. It also reforms the organisation and the modalities of the re-engagement system by allowing volunteers to re-engage directly after the first 36 months of military service.
Also, pay is reinstated for officer candidates from indirect recruitment; and provisions concerning the termination of the contract of engagement and re-engagement are being modernised.
