Luxembourg's Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure and the Luxembourg police have together confirmed details about the operation of the fixed speed cameras in operation across the Grand Duchy since earlier this year.

The confirmation of details has come about due to the number of questions from the public concerning the operation of the speed cameras. The four points include:

• speed cameras simultaneously monitor the speed of vehicles travelling in both directions, except for the one installed on the A4 at the Merl roundabout which only monitors traffic travelling from the direction of Esch-sur-Alzette towards Luxembourg;

• speed cameras measure speed of vehicles travelling on up to 3 lanes; they are able to determine the lane and direction of the offending vehicle;

• speed cameras measure speed over a distance of about 50 metres on the approach and a distance of about 50 meters moving away;

• speed cameras distinguish between light vehicles (such as cars and motorcycles) and heavy vehicles (such as trucks and buses), to which different speed limits can apply.
