Following the severe floods that affected towns and villages around Larochette and the Ernz Valley in the east of the Grand Duchy on Friday 22 July, Luxembourg's Ministry of the Economy has announced a series of financial aid for businesses affected.
The local aid organisations the Luxembourg Red Cross and Caritas have already raised €140,000 following a fund-raising appeal for households affected by the floods; today's announcement concerns businesses operating in the affected areas.
On Monday 1 August, Luxembourg's Secretary of State for the Economy, Francine Closener was in Cruchten, Larochette, Eppeldorf, Ermsdorf and Reisdorf and to visit several commercial, craft and tourism businesses that have been victims of thebad weather that occurred on the evening of Friday 22 July 2016. This site visit in the municipalities of Reisdorf, Larochette, Nommern and the Valley of Ernz was to get an overview of the damage caused by floods to businesses, cottage industries, campsites and hotels whose operators wish to resume their normal activities as quickly as possible.
After her visit, Secretary of State Closener said "In view of a possible quick and unbureaucratic compensation, it is important to have as detailed a record as possible of damage to craft and commercial businesses as well as tourist facilities in the region. Noting that the inventory of affected companies compiled by my service is not yet exhaustive, I invite companies that have not yet taken the step to contact the Ministry of Economy."
At its meeting of 26 July 2016 the Government's Cabinet meeting decided to make available a budget of €30 million for the benefit of all the flood victims.
