In order to reduce the high NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) emmissions in Bascharage caused by heavy traffic, the Luxembourg government's cabinet agreed on Friday for a bypass to be constructed to alleviate high traffic volumes through the town and to reduce air pollution.

NO2 levels along the N5 (Avenue de Luxembourg) and through the town centre have been measured and have both been found to be above safety limits.

A detailed study was undertaken to evaluate the best route to be chosen for the bypass, with option #2 selected. i.e. an above-ground route rather than a tunnel.
