As part of the project Ma’an Ensemble Zesummen funded by the Oeuvre Nationale de Secours Grande Duchesse Charlotte, ASTI organised an awards ceremony for students who took the Latin alphabet literacy class for people whose mother tongue is Arabic, as well as students who took an intensive course in French.
The creation of the literacy course was initiated following the increased demand for Arabic-speaking asylum seekers wanting to learn French, but not having sufficient knowledge of the Latin alphabet. The courses have been taught since November 2015 at the Lycée technique pour professions éducatives et sociales LTPES.
The classes have been held 2 hours a day, 4 days a week and over a period of 6 months. These courses are run by teachers along with an applicant for international protection to ensure translations from French to Arabic and vice versa. The people involved with running this project are all volunteers. The goal is to provide participants with a sufficient basis from which they can attend regular courses in the French language for beginners. In addition to this, ASTI organised an intensive French course of 150 hours duration, from April until July.
The people who participated in the literacy courses are able to continue to take the intensive French courses in October 2016. The students of the intensive French courses will be part of the ASTI project Connections - for the preparation and integration in the Luxembourgish labour market. A literacy course in the Latin alphabet for people speaking Persian (Farsi) is also planned for September 2016/2017.
The award ceremony was intended to thank the volunteers, the students and the school for participating in the project.
