On Friday, a National Suicide Prevention Plan for Luxembourg from 2015 to 2019 has been approved by the cabinet of the Luxembourg government.

The general objective of the Plan is to combat the causes and consequences of suicide and reduce suicide attempts and suicide deaths in Luxembourg. The specific objectives are to strengthen:

1. individuals, families and the community,
2. individual and collective resilience due to traumatic events,
3. Community aptitudes to identify care needs,
4. individual and collective capacity to respond quickly and appropriately to distressed people,
5. coordination between field actors to generate and secure a smooth transition to the person suffering.

In developing this plan, the authors chose to adopt the LIFE (Living is for everyone) model, an Australian theoretical model developed in 2007 and inspired by the Australian mental health strategy. The objective of LIFE is to provide the political authorities of the recommendations relating to the development of action plans for suicide prevention. The LIFE model defines six areas of intervention:

- AXIS 1 - Improving understanding of the problem of suicide
- AXIS 2 - Improving resilience of individuals and their ability to self-help
- AXIS 3 - Improving the social, collective resilience and the ability to prevent suicide
- AXIS 4 - Adopt a coordinated approach to suicide prevention
- AXIS 5 - Provide targeted activities for suicide prevention
- AXIS 6 - Establish Suicide Prevention standards and quality standards

For these 6 axes, 33 actions to be implemented between 2015 and 2019 were identified as high priority.
