The Grand Ducal Police have issued a reminder to members of the public to be on their guard in respect to telephone calls from someone purporting to work for Microsoft who informs the person they are calling of a virus on their computer.

This scam has been doign the rounds in Luxembourg before and the police have recently been made aware of more instances recently.

What normally happens is that the caller then asks the victim to connect to a remote maintenance page. By connecting to this page, the victim allows the caller, the cyber criminal, to have access to his/her personal computer. Quickly, a Trojan virus is installed on the computer of the victim and thus allows the cyber criminal to obtain the victim's banking details and to proceed to conducting unlawful transactions at the expense of the victim.

According to Microsoft, the company does not make any telephone contact of this kind with its customers.
