In the context of Digital Lëtzebuerg, the Media and Communications Service (SMC) of the Ministry of State, together with the Maps and Topography Administration (Cadastre) have developed a map of the ultra-high speed broadband coverage throughout Luxembourg, with baseline data provided by network operators.
While statistics exist regarding national coverage, data collected by the SMC allow for the first time one to have a local view and determine the scope of ultra-high-speed broadband across the entire Grand Duchy.
The coverage map confirms the excellent postion of the Grand Duchy's status regarding national connectivity. In each municipality, whether located in urban or rural areas, at least 4 out of 5 households have access to ultra-high speed 30 Mbit/s broadband and a minimum of 84 out of 105 towns, i.e. a rate of 95%. Moreover, in 27 towns, 1 Gb/s is available to more than half the total households.
Hobscheid is the most connected municipality. According to information from the telecom operators, all households can subscribe to offers up to 1 Gbit/s. Leudelange and Walferdange complete the Top 3.
The study also highlighted the important role played by cable networks in providing ultra-broadband deals; in 47 municipalities, the CATV network offers the widest coverage. On 2 of the 3 municipalities least served, such a network is absent (Bech and Beaufort).
Xavier Bettel, Minister of Communications and Media, commented "I welcome the efforts undertaken by the various electronic communications operators to help achieve the coverage goals of the national strategy for ultra-high speed networks, including in rural regions. I appeal for operators to now work together to overcome the last major barrier to the deployment of ultra-high speed broadband, namely the proper wiring of apartment buildings. Making ultra-broadband accessible to all is an integral part of Digital Lëtzebuerg goals."
