A tragic accident at the Remerschen ponds in the south of the country yesterday claimed the life of a 16 year-old youth.

The former gravelpit has been a popular destination for people to escape the summer heat. However, it does pose a danger as the bottom slopes away steeply from the bank. There are also pond weeds growing in the water.

The accident happened shortly before 15:30 when the youth disappeared from sight. The alarm was raised and the emergency services were called to the pond; they arrived quickly and immediately started the search for the youth who could not be seen from the banks. Due to the diffiuclties in locating his body, the search was supported by four police sub-aqua divers and other officers in a police helicopter. His body was subsequently recovered.

The youth, originally from Malawi, was living in a home in Luxembourg city and was at Remerschen participating in a youth activity. Other members of the group were given psychological counselling.
