The eighth edition of Luxembourg Art Week, Luxembourg's international contemporary art fair, is taking place in Glacis Square in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 November 2022.
Previously held at Hall Victor Hugo, which was transformed into a COVID-19 vaccination centre in late 2020, Luxembourg Art Week moved to a large tent (with a surface of more than 5,000m2) in Glacis in 2021 – the venue to which it will return this year. As Alex Reding, organiser of Luxembourg Art Week, told Chronicle.lu, this new format had proven successful.
Alex Reding also confirmed that this year's event was more international than previous editions, with more countries represented among the 80 participating galleries, collectives and institutions than before. In fact, this year's exhibitors are coming from fourteen countries across five continents.
The event, which drew 15,000 visitors in 2021, comprises three sections: the Main Section, bringing together the various contemporary art galleries; the Solo discovery section, aimed at showcasing the work of a select few artists (six this year) through a dedicated project; the Take Off prospective section, supported by Luxembourg’s Ministry of Culture and targeting emerging young galleries, collectives and institutions.
Brand new this year (and considered the highlight of this edition) is the awarding of the very first Luxembourg Art Prize (Lëtzebuerger Konschtpräis) by Luxembourg's Minstry of Culture on the opening night of the fair (Friday 11 November 2022). The award ceremony will take place in the presence of Her Royal Highness the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg and the Minister of Culture, Sam Tanson. Last month, Luxembourgish artist Berthe Lutgen was named the winner of this new prize in the field of visual arts. This biennial prize rewards an artist for the whole of his/her work, career and lasting commitment to the Luxembourg art scene. Following the presentation of the Luxembourg Art Prize, Luxembourg Art Week 2022 will be officially inaugurated and open to the public.
In addition to the main fair, a whole range of side events, organised in partnership with Luxembourg Art Week, will kick off already on Tuesday 8 November 2022. These include the installation of monumental sculptures, conferences such as an English-language symposium dedicated to the legacy of the late Luxembourgish artist Michel Majerus (at Mudam Luxembourg on Wednesday 9 November 2022 from 10:00 to 17:00) and a conference (also in English) dedicated to artificial intelligence and organised in the framework of Esch2022 - European Capital of Culture (in the fair's conference area on Saturday 12 November 2022 at 15:30), performance series, film screenings, workshops and exclusive guided tours in partner institutions and at the fair.
