On Friday 28 February 2025, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture announced that the Government Council (Cabinet) has adopted measures to promote regional products and combat food waste at official events.
The ministry stated that it is essential to support local producers and preserve Luxembourg’s resources. It added that the initiative is part of a strong and exemplary approach, in line with sustainable development goals.
Luxembourg’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture, Martine Hansen, stated that: "As public institutions, we have a leading role to play. Promoting our regional products and limiting food waste are not just recommendations, but concrete commitments for a more responsible future. By setting an example, we hope to involve the entire society in this positive dynamic”.
The ministry added that the government has therefore decided to implement several measures to embody this commitment:
- all official events and receptions must prioritise local and regional products in their menus, in order to support Luxembourg’s agriculture, viticulture and horticulture industries;
- in order to limit food waste, events will be organised based on a realistic estimate of the quantities needed and initiatives to recover surpluses and redistribute unsold products will be encouraged;
- these measures will be highlighted during events through speeches, communications or invitations, in order to raise awareness among participants of the importance of combating food waste and consuming local products.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture explained that, with this initiative, the government is sending a signal that it is time to act for more responsible food and increased support for the country’s producers. By adopting these best practices, each ministry will be able to play a leading role, encouraging society to follow this example for a more sustainable future.
