From Tuesday 11 to Sunday 16 October 2022, Luxembourg's national robotics team is competing in the world final of the "FIRST Global" robotics competition in Geneva, Switzerland.
Luxembourg team is made of five young people aged between fifteen and eighteen and they have been preparing for the competition for past few months.
The association “make it” asbl, in collaboration with the Pedagogical and Technological Research and Innovation Coordination Service (Service de Coordination de la Recherche et de l’Innovation pédagogiques et technologiques - SCRIPT) of the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, prepared the framework for the team to represent Luxembourg during this tournament of more than 180 nations.
The national robotics team was formed in June 2022 as part of a national selection through the Luxembourg Youth Robotics Challenge (LYRC). Several teams participated in this national robotics competition. Since then, the youngsters have been strategising how to best place themselves in the world tournament.
“You have to pay attention to all the details,” confirmed Ilyes, captain of the national team. “The competition takes place on several levels”, explained Marie, the team’s “social networks” delegate, “There is the technical aspect but also that of inter-team communication”. Indeed, the nations represented are all invited to share their tips with each other. “Coopetition” is the name chosen by FIRST, an American non-profit association, which aims to spread science and engineering among young people and which organises the global competition.
“We are confident that the young people will do everything possible to place themselves well during this meeting. But I believe that the most important thing is to motivate them to stay in STEAM [Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics] so that they can continue to solve the challenges linked to modern civilisation”, remarked Marc Teusch, project coordinator at make it.
