Jean Asselborn, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs;

Luxembourg's Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, has issued a statement on the current situation in Iraq.

"We are very concerned about the developments in Iraq and we call on all concerned to show restraint and de-escalation. We hope that reason will prevail and that those responsible will keep a cool head. History has taught us, with the outbreak of the war in Iraq and its aftermath, that problems cannot be resolved by making weapons speak. Diplomacy must take precedence.

Attacks on diplomatic missions are unacceptable. All the light must be shed on the recent attacks on the United States Embassy in Baghdad. It is the responsibility of the Iraqi government to guarantee the security of all diplomatic missions on its territory.

We call for the establishment of direct communication channels between Tehran and Washington, in order to avoid any escalation of violence in the region."
