Today, Thursday 7 February 2019, Luxembourg's Minister of Internal Affairs, François Bausch, participated in the informal meeting of Justice and Home Affairs Ministers (JHA) held in Bucharest.

As for the dedicated session on the internal security aspect, the ministers discussed the challenges and opportunities for enhanced cooperation in the fight against terrorism in the EU as well as on the fight against terrorism and impact of digitalisation on police services.

In the debate on the fight against terrorism, which was based on a specific report by the European Parliament, Minister Bausch stressed that one of the major challenges emerging from the report on terrorism is to implement the measures put in place, to familiarise the services with the new instruments and to evaluate the performance of our different trading systems in order to be able to mobilise their full potential. For Minister Bausch, the first step is to strike the right balance between the imperatives of security and the protection of people's fundamental rights to life and security.

In his intervention, Minister Bausch also stressed the importance of taking into account aspects of cross-border mobility and expressed his scepticism about the various calls to extend the PNR system to all other modes of transport, and in particular all rail and bus transport.
