Luxembourgish Foreign Minister, Jean Asselborn, yesterday held talks with the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic Iran, Mohammad Javad Zarif, on the sidelines of the 70th UN General Assembly.
The meeting between the Luxembourg Minister and the head of Iranian diplomacy presented an opportuity to take stock of relations between Iran and the Grand Duchy. The two political figures also addressed the situation in the Middle East in light of the new dynamic between Iran and the international community following the Iran nuclear agreement between the country and the five permanent members of the Security Council along with Germany.
The situation in Syria was at the heart of discussions, with the ministers making reference to recent policy initiatives at the international level and the means to give new impetus to efforts in finding a political solution to fight effectively against Daech. This sentiment echoed a speech made previously by Jean Asselborn in New York, wherein he outlined four key points in solving the Syrian crisis.
As Luxembourg holds the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU until December, Minister Asselborn used the meeting as an opportunity to discuss the issue of the influx of refugees to Europe, particularly regarding international protection seekers from Syria.
The talks allowed for the review of the implementation of the agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue.
