11 October 2016 marked the inauguration of Luxembourg city’s €785,000 Square Jan Palach, located just off the Place d’Armes, after its significant redevelopment.

On Tuesday, Minister François Bausch, Mayor Lydie Polfer and the First Alderman Sam Tanson officially opened Luxembourg city’s newly renovated square, which was designed by Arlette Schneiders Architectes. Plans for the square began in 2014 with construction taking place from mid-October 2015 to August 2016.

The project’s aim was to create a relaxing, open and flexible space integrated in the urban context of adjacent streets and the nearby Place d’Armes. It cost €785,000 to complete the square, which is accessible from three entrances from the aforementioned Place d’Armes.

The newly renovated square is bordered by trees and water fountains, giving the space a sense of freshness in summer. It is lit by lamps identical to those found at the Place d’Armes.
