Mrs Heather Duxbury, former Primary Head Teacher of St George’s International School in Luxembourg-Hamm, received her well-deserved MBE award from Buckingham Palace for services to British Education and the British community in Luxembourg on Friday 12 June.
Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) is one of five classes of awards appointed by the British monarch. During Heather’s leadership, the school grew to 650 students and a new secondary school, including sixth form, were created. Currently St George’s International School Luxembourg has approximately 700 Primary and Secondary students enrolled from over 50 different nationalities. The school caters to students from ages 3 to 18+ and offers IGCSE and A-Level exams to its Secondary students, giving them the ability to attend first-class universities all over the world.
On the day of the awards ceremony, winning candidates and Mrs Duxbury were called into the ballroom in groups to receive their prestigious awards from the Prince of Wales. Mrs Duxbury returned feeling honoured to have met the Prince himself.
‘It was amazing to hold a personal conversation with the Prince of Wales: to feel that he was genuinely interested in me and that he was presenting me with this prestigious award. I then had the opportunity to watch the rest of the presentation, absorb the atmosphere and admire my award. My one regret of the day is that all the many people who were part of the team that helped me to gain this award could not be there to share the day. Truly a day never to forget.’
The ceremony ended shortly after the awards were handed out and the Prince and the Members of the Royal Household departed. The recipients exited through the courtyard, Mrs Duxbury’s last opportunity to absorb the atmosphere and admire her award.
