Meeting with CSA management; Credit: Chronicle.lu

Continuing my series of articles on my recent visit to Henan proving in China, this one focuses on visiting the Zhengzhou International Airport and meeting with its management.

The 3rd largest airport in China currently has two runways with plans to expand this to five; it has two passenger terminals (the second built in 2015) and seven cargo terminals in three cargo zones. It had 30 million passengers in 2023, it is currently aiming for 40 million passengers this year, with a maximum capacity of up to 100 million, as well as five million tonnes of cargo.

Air passenger routes/destinations total 192 currently, in 111 countries.

Inside the passenger terminal are a high-speed train station that links with Zhengzhou's network of eight major lines, access to standard rail services and also to the city subway; it also sees 3-4,000 Uber-equivalent pick-ups / drop-downs daily.

The airport currently has 25 cargo airlines, with Cargolux carrying the most cargo by volume (20% of the total); Cargolux Italia also flies to/from Milan. It serves 57 destination cities in 25 countries, across Europe, Asia and America. Domestic cargo counts for 63% of cargo volumes, with 37% internationally.

Its cargo includes both perishable and non-perishable goods (fruit, meat, live animals, pharmaceuticals, etc.), as well as dangerous goods (when asked, this includes lithium batteries and luxury vehicles, etc.). They put a significant emphasis on (administration formality) clearance efficiency and use bonded warehouses and duty free services within their airport zone.

The passenger/cargo airport is ultra modern and is incredibly spacious, with multimodal access top of the design agenda for both passengers and cargo.
